Bina’s expertise and interests lie in mathematics education. She has considerable experience in co-constructing with schools professional development solutions that are soundly based on current research and evidence that supports the core principles of the New Zealand Curriculum. As a mathematics consultant, her role in schools is to support leaders to build and sustain professional learning communities that enable teachers to grow their capability. She has presented at conferences and symposia in New Zealand and Australia, including PMA, AMA, NZAMT, MERGA, MAV and ULearn20.
Bina believes in flexible grouping (de-streaming) to enhance mathematics learning in classrooms. In 2021, her paper Making Math Accessible to All Students: Effective Pedagogy? was published in the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. When delivering professional development in schools Bina explores teacher beliefs about education; outlines norms to create a conducive classroom climate for learning; explores the notion of orchestrating classroom discussions; and encourages teachers to design challenging low-floor high-ceiling tasks that allow access for all students. During lockdown, she conducted effective on-line webinars with school communities.

As a PCT Bina’s webinars were hands-on and engaging. These webinars were very valuable and relatable, allowing me to implement and connect my new learning into my practice with ease. They were well informed with current research and evidence in practice giving me the confidence to make changes in my classroom program. Her warm and friendly approach allowed me to feel at ease to ask questions, promoting robust discussions surrounding best mathematical practice. Bina’s passion for mathematics and up-skilling other professionals is clear to see, these webinars are easily accessible and affordable. I would highly recommend it!

I observed Bina with an open mind; I eagerly noticed her strategies during several PLD online sessions as well as at school, and the information was wonderful, informative, and filled me with enthusiasm as I learned about the important role of myself as a teacher when doing problem solving in maths. After attending Bina’s PLD’s, I felt empowered with new knowledge and ideas to move forward with my class. With Talk Moves, many children’s vocabulary started to expand immensely. The more I applied the new skills and amazing strategies I learnt through the PLD with Bina, the more students’ collaborative problem solving became evident in my classroom. Students started taking part because they were not singled out for an answer, but could strategize together with their peers, which again boosted their confidence. We also received ongoing support regarding our lesson planning and made sure that these are regularly reviewed in order to move forward. Bina’s useful PLD’s has opened up a new start for mathematical problem solving in my classroom, and as a maths coach, I thoroughly enjoy sharing these great ideas and strategies with my colleagues. Bina shares her knowledge in a very professional way and gives time for teachers to be part of discussions.

I always looked forward to our Maths PD sessions with Bina. As a result of her facilitation, I feel very confident in sustaining a collaborative problem-solving approach as it is now embedded into my teaching style. As a school, we not only use this approach in maths, but the tools and strategies have spilled over into all curriculum areas, enhancing peer discussions, student engagement and higher-order thinking. Authentic teamwork was also ignited among teachers with collaborative planning and teaching even in our school setting of single-cell classrooms. Bina has rejuvenated the teaching of maths for me and helped me to grow as a teacher.
